Personal Statement

Sitting by the crackling fire, I pulled my woolen shawl tighter around my shoulders, trying to fend off the German Autumn. Across from us, Herr Heidenreich, our stable master, was talking animatedly, switching between English and German. My mother, sitting beside me, was laughing along, even though she had probably lost the thread of the story a few minutes ago. I know I had.

Someone suggested we play a game where we had to call each other’s bluff, and the losers would muck out the stables at dawn. “Der Jüngste—Ronith, you’re up!”

"Fine, I can talk to horses.” With so many equestrians around, my claim went unchallenged.
