Editor's note
A debate champion and software builder learns that territorial control—whether in competition or coding—stems from insecurity. After his grandfather struggles with his poorly-designed interface, he realizes that asking for help and collaboration produce stronger work than solo dominance.

Personal Statement

Discuss an accomplishment, event, or realization that sparked a period of personal growth and a new understanding of yourself or others.

Wolves pee on trees. Bears claw bark. I rewrote everyone's code, dismissed my partner’s rebuttals, controlled every machine learning architecture. Different species, same instinct: this is mine, stay out.

Six years of debate taught me to dismantle opponents before they could speak. Third speaker, reply speech. I won by making sure the other side never voiced their truth. My room became a fortress where I built alone. Vocalize, voice navigation software. SecureSense, the threat system. Forty-seven features without asking users what they needed. My co-founder, Suhaan would send suggestions. I'd catalog why mine was better, reply let me think about it, then do it my way. Asking for help meant admitting I was faking it.  New boarding school’s housing forms: single room. I built my new hold in Room-104C.

My grandfather stopped video calling after accidentally activating some feature. He was protecting himself from interfaces designed by people like me. I offered help. It's easy, Nana. Three months later, I showed him Vocalize. Forty-seven commands. Never asked what he wanted. He tried the wake word. The software didn't recognize his accent. Tried again, voice careful. Still nothing. Then: Sparsh, do you want me to use this, or did you build this for you?
