I emptied my pockets—phone, wallet, keys—cold metal in my hands. The metal detector beeped. I unbuckled my belt and slipped off my shoes.
The corridors of Jaipur Central Jail stretched ahead. Behind them, the men waited—faces hardened, some twice, others thrice my age—their skeptical eyes wondering: What could a kid teach us? How could I, a teenager who once couldn't order a sandwich without stuttering, command respect here?
Rewind to fifth grade. Laughter filled the auditorium as I stumbled through my elocution; each stutter met with mockery. In history class, I froze after 10 seconds, embarrassed while presenting my views on colonialism. At home, I'd rush to my room, burying my face in my pillow. Nights were the worst. The fear of speaking, even in my dreams, led to bedwetting. I'd wake up cold and ashamed. This constant humiliation felt like a weight, pulling me deeper into isolation.
